Bicycle cleats are small—typically between 30 and 60 grams, roughly 3 to 4 inches long—yet they are the sole mechanical interface between your foot and pedal. They are rigid plates, usually made of plastic or composite materials with metal reinforcement, that bolt to the bottom of a cycling shoe and clip into a spring-loaded pedal mechanism. That simplicity masks complexity. A cleat's position, angle, and release mechanism directly affect how power flows from your legs into the bike, whether your knees track safely through the pedal stroke, how long your feet remain secure during hard efforts or emergency maneuvers, and whether you experience pain or numbness after hours in the saddle.
To understand cleats in practice, it helps to start with the pedal system itself. A modern clipless pedal—the term "clipless" is historical jargon meaning no toe clip, only a cleat—contains a spring-loaded cage or platform and a retention mechanism. When you clip in, the cleat's retention lugs (the protruding sections on the cleat's underside) engage with the pedal's spring-loaded arms or jaws. The spring tension holds the cleat and shoe firmly to the pedal across multiple axes: horizontal (forward/back and side to side), vertical (down into the pedal), and rotational (twisting). This rigid connection means that every ounce of force you apply through your legs is transmitted directly to the pedal crank, with no slop or flex in the interface itself.
