A bicycle cage is a deceptively simple component: a rigid holder that mounts to a bicycle frame to secure a bottle or other accessory. It sits at the intersection of ergonomics, structural engineering, and aerodynamic fluid dynamics, and its performance has a direct, measurable impact on a rider's efficiency and safety. A cage that fails to retain a bottle at speed, or one that forces a rider into an awkward reach, is not a minor annoyance; it is a flaw that compromises the entire ride.
To understand what a bicycle cage actually is, you have to separate it from the marketing tropes of "weight-saving" and "aerodynamic" that surround it. At its core, a cage is a clamping mechanism that must perform three functions reliably and repeatedly. First, it must hold a standard bottle securely against three mutually perpendicular forces: vertical vibration from road or trail chatter, lateral forces from cornering and wind, and forward-aft forces from acceleration and braking.
