A bicycle brake lever is the primary interface between the rider's intent and the braking system's action. It is not a simple switch or a trigger; it is a precision mechanical device designed to translate the force from your hand into a controlled deceleration of the bicycle. Understanding its function requires a look beyond the lever itself to the system it controls. The lever is the starting point for every stop, and how it performs determines the entire character of the braking experience, from a feather-light feathering on a long descent to an emergency lock-up on a busy city street.

At its most basic, a brake lever is a class-one lever, pivoting on a fulcrum. When you pull the lever blade, the force you apply is multiplied (or in some cases, reduced) based on the ratio of the distance from your hand to the pivot point and the distance from the pivot point to the cable anchor. This is the lever's "pull ratio." For a typical mechanical rim brake lever, this ratio is designed to pull a specific length of cable for a given distance of lever travel while multiplying hand force to increase braking power. A mountain bike linear-pull (V-brake) lever, for example, has a different pull ratio than a road bike lever because it needs to pull more cable with less force to accommodate the mechanical advantage of the V-brake arms themselves.
