Chapter 1: Understanding Bicycle Brake Calipers
A bicycle brake caliper is a mechanical actuator. Its job is to convert the force you apply at the lever into a clamping force on a rotor (in a disc brake) or on a rim (in a rim brake), which then converts the kinetic energy of a moving bike into heat through friction. That process is simple to state, but the engineering choices in how the caliper performs that conversion determine everything from stopping distance on a wet descent to whether you can remove a wheel without deflating a tire. Every caliper is a compromise between power, modulation, weight, durability, and serviceability - and understanding where each design sits on those five axes is the core of practical brake knowledge.
What a Caliper Is and Is Not
A caliper, strictly speaking, is the assembly that holds the brake pads and applies the clamping force. It does not include the rotor, the lever, or the hose/cable that transmits the input force, though all of those are part of the braking system. The caliper bolts to the frame or fork at a standardized mounting interface, and it contains one or more pistons (hydraulic) or a mechanical arm (cable-actuated) that pushes the pads against the rotor or rim. When you pull the lever, you are not pulling a cable attached directly to the caliper in a hydraulic system; you are pushing hydraulic fluid through a hose, which then moves pistons inside the caliper body.
