What a Bottom Bracket Actually Is
The bottom bracket is the rotating interface between your crankset and your bicycle frame. It sits inside the bottom bracket shell, the cylindrical section of frame tubing at the bottom of the bike, roughly where your pedals are located. The crankset's spindle passes through it, and the bearings inside it allow the spindle - and therefore the crank arms and pedals - to spin smoothly and with minimal friction. It is the point on the bike that transmits every watt of pedaling force from your legs into the drivetrain, and it does so while supporting the full static weight of the rider plus the dynamic loads of pedaling, climbing, and sprinting.
In practical terms, you can think of the bottom bracket as a precision bearing assembly housed in a standard-sized shell. It must do three things well: rotate with very low friction, maintain perfect alignment between the two crank arms, and keep the drivetrain quiet and stable under load. It also has to survive the elements - road spray, rain, mud, salt, and grit - with only the limited protection offered by a few seals and a thin layer of grease. The bottom bracket is one of the few components on a bike that is simultaneously high-precision, constantly loaded, and routinely exposed to the worst conditions the road or trail can throw at it.
