Chapter 1: Understanding Bellows
A bellows is a hand-operated (or foot or electrically operated) device that forces air into a fire at controlled pressure and volume. It consists of three essential components: a chamber that expands and contracts, a one-way valve system that ensures air flows in one direction, and a nozzle through which the air is delivered. The user operates the handle or lever to compress the chamber, pushing air out the nozzle toward the fire. On the backstroke, the chamber expands, the intake valve opens, and fresh air refills the chamber for the next stroke.
This is not metaphorical or theoretical. A bellows directly manipulates the oxygen supply to a fire. Oxygen is one of the three requirements for combustion—heat and fuel are the others. A fire struggling to ignite or maintain itself in a fireplace or under a cooking pot is almost always oxygen-starved. The bellows solves that problem by forcing fresh air into the coal or kindling, raising the temperature at that point and increasing the combustion rate. If you have ever watched a small, dim fire suddenly leap into bright flames when someone directs air toward it—whether by blowing on it or using a bellows—you have witnessed oxygen-deficient combustion becoming oxygen-rich combustion.
