Beer dispensers and taps are precision fluid-handling systems, not glorified faucets. This distinction is the foundation of everything that follows in this handbook. A faucet delivers water from one place to another. A beer dispenser maintains carbonation and flavor in a product sensitive to temperature, pressure, oxygen, and light while controlling the rate of pour and ensuring consistent quality night after night. The difference is not semantic—it affects installation complexity, maintenance cost, troubleshooting difficulty, and product quality.

At the most basic level, a beer dispensing system moves beer from a pressurized container (a keg) through a network of tubing and fittings, cools it to a precise temperature, and delivers it through a tap at the correct serving temperature and carbonation level. Each component matters. A difference of 2 degrees Fahrenheit in serving temperature changes the rate of CO2 release and alters the drinker's perception of flavor and mouthfeel. A regulator set one PSI (pound per square inch) too high will result in excessive foam; one PSI too low will produce flat beer. A piece of vinyl tubing that is slightly too wide will create backpressure and collapse as the beer flows, reducing pour rate and potentially drawing oxygen into the line.
