Bed sheets are woven or knit textiles designed to be placed directly on a mattress and under a person's body during sleep. They are among the most frequently washed and physically stressed textiles in a household or institutional setting, yet they are sold with less technical information than a pair of socks. Understanding what bed sheets actually are—the materials, construction methods, and performance trade-offs built into them—is essential for anyone who needs to choose them wisely, specify them for an organization, resell them, or troubleshoot why a particular sheet failed when another identical-sounding sheet did not.
The Basic Physical Structure
A bed sheet is fundamentally a flat textile made from fibers that have been spun into yarn and then woven or knit together into a fabric. The vast majority of bed sheets in commercial and consumer markets are woven—meaning two sets of yarns, called the warp and the weft, are interlaced at right angles on a loom. The warp yarns run lengthwise down the loom; the weft yarns run perpendicular to them. The way these yarns cross—tight or loose, in simple patterns or complex ones—creates the weave structure, which determines how the sheet feels, drapes, and wears.
A knit sheet (increasingly common in athletic and performance segments) is made differently: yarns are looped and interlocked in horizontal rows, similar to how a sweater is made. Knit sheets are more forgiving of fit irregularities, stretch more easily, and shed pilling less readily than woven sheets,
