A bean bag chair is a furniture system consisting of two primary components: a fabric cover and loose-fill material inside. The fill—typically expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads, shredded foam, or virgin polyester fiber—distributes the user's weight across thousands of small points of contact rather than rigid structural elements like wood or metal frames. The cover, usually made from polyester, cotton blend, or performance fabric, contains the fill and transfers the user's weight evenly to the floor. This simple system has one immediate consequence: bean bag chairs conform to the user's body rather than forcing the body to conform to a fixed shape. That conformity is why they exist and why they matter.

Understanding bean bag chairs begins with understanding what they are not. They are not upholstered chairs—they have no internal springs, suspension systems, or cushioning layers. They are not foam seats—there is no solid foam core to maintain structure. They are not inflatables—they don't rely on air pressure for support. Instead, they are granular systems. The fill particles (each typically 1-3 millimeters in diameter) rest against each other and against the cover. When a person sits, the particles shift and compress locally, allowing the cover to sink into the space around the user's form. As the person stands, the particles flow back and gradually re-expand, and the cover returns toward its original shape. This cycle—compression and recovery—happens continuously over the lifespan of the chair.
