A basketball is a hollow sphere made of rubber or synthetic/leather panels, inflated with air to a specific pressure, designed to be bounced, thrown, and caught in a game where two teams attempt to throw it through elevated hoops at opposite ends of a court. That functional description is accurate but incomplete. To understand what a basketball actually is, you need to understand how its construction affects the experience of play and the cost of ownership.
The modern basketball is a product of more than a century of iteration. Early basketballs, used in the 1890s when the game was invented, were soccer balls with a hole cut in them. Players bounced them on wooden courts and outdoor surfaces, and the balls degraded quickly. By the 1930s, basketballs had become more specialized objects: inflatable bladders surrounded by rubber or leather panels, sewn together in patterns designed to distribute stress and provide consistent surface texture. The game's rules evolved around the ball's properties—size, weight, inflation pressure—and the ball's design evolved to meet the game's demands for consistency, control, and durability across different environments.
Today's basketball is fundamentally a pneumatic (air-filled) device. The interior is a rubber bladder that holds air. Surrounding the bladder is a panel covering—typically rubber, synthetic leather, or genuine leather—that is stitched or bonded to the bladder in a specific pattern.
