A baseball bat is a precision instrument, not a simple stick. It is a carefully designed tool engineered to transfer the energy of a player's swing into a ball with maximum efficiency, while surviving impacts of over 6,000 pounds of force. To understand a bat, you must understand what it is made of, how that material is shaped, and how the resulting structure interacts with the laws of physics. At its most basic, a bat consists of three main physical regions: the barrel, the taper, and the handle. The barrel is the thickest part, intended to contact the ball. The taper is a smooth transition from the thick barrel down to a thinner handle. The handle is what the batter grips, topped by a knob at the bottom to prevent the hand from slipping off. This may seem obvious, but the specific dimensions and material composition of each region dramatically affect how the bat performs.
