Chapter 1: Understanding Barebone Computers
Barebone computers are a distinct and pragmatic class of hardware. They sit directly between a fully prebuilt desktop you unpack, plug in, and use, and a completely custom machine you assemble from individual components you selected yourself. A barebone is sold as a partially assembled unit: the chassis, motherboard, and power supply are already installed and tested by the manufacturer. You are responsible for adding the CPU, memory, storage, and operating system, and then configuring the system to run them correctly.
This is not a stripped-down laptop or a shrunk-down smartphone. It is a conventional computer architecture with a standard CPU socket, standard memory slots, and standard storage connectors, just packaged into a chassis designed to hold those components in a reliable and efficient way. The barebone vendor has taken one decision off your plate: they have matched a chassis, a motherboard, and a power supply to each other, and they have verified that those three parts physically fit together and power on. What they have not done is choose the compute elements, which remain the parts that most directly define the machine's capabilities and cost.
Consider the practical appeal. A business that needs twenty identical point-of-sale terminals for a retail chain does not want to source twenty motherboard and case combinations and assemble them by hand, but they also do not want to pay a premium for a consumer desktop that comes with a loud graphics card and an operating system they will immediately
