What Bar Soap Is
Bar soap is the solid product of a reaction between fat (or oil) and alkali (typically sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide). The reaction is called saponification. When fat reacts with alkali under controlled conditions—heat, time, and measurement—the fat molecules break down and recombine into soap molecules (called fatty acid salts) and glycerin. The result is a solid or semi-solid mass that, when cooled and cured, becomes bar soap.
That is the chemical reality. Bar soap is not a gentler alternative to detergent, not a natural cleanser in contrast to synthetic ones, and not inherently better or worse than liquid soap. It is a specific chemical compound made through a specific process. Some bar soaps are made from animal fats; others from plant oils. Some are highly processed; others are made in small batches with minimal additives. All of them, however, are the product of saponification.
