A banner is a large-format fabric or vinyl surface, typically printed or blank, suspended horizontally, vertically, or at an angle to communicate a message, mark a space, or define a boundary. But that definition masks what actually matters: banners are engineered products whose performance depends entirely on the choice of base material, construction method, installation technique, and environmental exposure. Understanding what a banner is requires understanding these material and structural choices, not just its visual purpose.
Banners exist because certain problems in visual communication and space definition require solutions that posters, signs, and other print formats cannot deliver. A poster is typically 24 by 36 inches, mounted flat to a wall or window, and built to last months indoors. A banner is often 4 feet tall and 20 feet wide, or larger, suspended in open air, exposed to wind and sun for months or years, and must remain readable and structurally intact. The scale and environmental exposure create different engineering requirements. Material must withstand wind loads that would tear a poster. Fastening systems must distribute weight across wide surfaces without tearing the material itself. The base material must resist UV degradation—fading, brittleness, and strength loss—over extended outdoor exposure. These are not cosmetic problems; they determine whether a banner survives one month or three years in service.
