A dancer at the barre may weigh 120 pounds; during an exercise like a grand battement or a quick rond de jambe, the force transferred to the barre can temporarily exceed the dancer's body weight, and that force is often transferred through one hand or a small area of contact. A barre must tolerate this load hundreds of times per day without failing, deforming, or becoming unsafe.
