A badminton net is a rectangular mesh barrier, suspended between two vertical posts at a fixed height, that divides a badminton court and defines the boundary of legal play. In competitive badminton, the net is not incidental—it is a regulated piece of sports infrastructure, and its specifications affect everything from player safety to the validity of a match. Understanding what a badminton net actually is, how it functions within regulation play, and why its specifications matter is the foundation for selecting, installing, and maintaining one correctly.
The Basic Function
The badminton net serves one primary function: to divide the court into two equal halves and establish a barrier over which players must hit the shuttlecock. The shuttlecock must clear the net and land within the opponent's court boundaries to count as a legal shot. If the shuttlecock touches the net during play but still lands in the opponent's court, the shot counts as legal in most formats—the net is a barrier to clear, not an obstacle that disqualifies a play.
This simple function drives much of the net's design.
