Chapter 1: Understanding Baby Bottles

A baby bottle is a rigid or flexible container designed to deliver formula or expressed breast milk to an infant, combining engineered materials, fluid-control mechanisms, and ergonomic design to accommodate infant physiology and parental handling requirements. Unlike a simple cup, a bottle is a system: the rigid container provides a seal that prevents contamination and spillage; the nipple—a separate component with a specific orifice size—controls flow rate to match an infant's natural sucking reflex; and the connection between container and nipple must withstand pressure, temperature cycles, and repeated disassembly for cleaning.

The bottle exists to solve a specific problem: how to safely and hygienically deliver adequate nutrition to an infant who cannot hold a vessel, regulate intake autonomously, or communicate when satisfied. This problem has concrete constraints. An infant's mouth and throat anatomy differ significantly from an adult's, and feeding mechanics change month by month. Premature infants and those with cleft palate have different requirements than term infants. A bottle intended for a 3-month-old may be inefficient or unsafe for a 9-month-old. The container must survive repeated heating (to warm milk), cooling (for storage), and sterilization (to eliminate pathogenic bacteria and viruses). It cannot leach chemicals into the milk, must not harbor bacteria in crevices, and needs to be affordable enough for families to own several units.
