Baby bathing is the routine act of fully or partially immersing an infant in water for the purpose of hygiene, temperature regulation, and sensory development. But a professional working with infants, or a parent who wants to do this properly, quickly learns that the subject is deeper than filling a plastic tub. The physical constraints of an infant's body, the thermal dynamics of water and skin, and the mechanics of safely handling a slippery, moving subject create a task that requires structured thinking. The first thing to understand is the physiological context. A newborn infant cannot regulate body temperature the way an adult does. The thermoregulatory system is immature. The surface-area-to-mass ratio in an infant is three to five times higher than in an adult, which means heat is lost to the environment, and to water, much more quickly. In a study context, you will often see the recommendation to keep bath water between 90 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit (32 to 38 degrees Celsius).
