Chapter 1: Understanding Axes
An axe is a lever and a wedge. It is not, as many people assume, primarily a blade designed to cut through material like a knife. This distinction shapes everything about how the tool works, why different axes are designed the way they are, and why seemingly small specification differences—head weight, handle length, balance point—translate into real differences in control, fatigue, and safety in the field.
The basic mechanism is straightforward. A head (the metal part, weighing anywhere from 2 to 6 pounds for hand axes, more for specialized tools) is mounted on a handle (traditionally wood, increasingly composite materials) roughly 28 to 36 inches long. You grip the handle, swing it in an arc, and direct the head toward a target: a log to split, a branch to fell, a surface to chop. The weight of the head, moving at speed at the end of the handle lever, concentrates force at the cutting edge. That concentrated force, combined with the wedge shape of the head, drives the cutting edge into material and forces the material apart.
This is not a cutting action. A knife blade separates fibers by shearing. An axe head does something different: it penetrates the wood and, because the head is wider behind the edge than at the edge itself, it forces the wood apart as it goes deeper. This is why a dull axe is useless—it cannot penetrate and wedge effectively—and why an axe handle longer than your arm doesn't make
