An audio mixer is the component in an audio system that accepts multiple input signals from different sources, combines them into one or more outputs, and provides the operator with control over level, routing, and basic processing. It is not glamorous, but it is essential. Without a mixer, you cannot combine a microphone and a laptop in a conference room. Without a mixer, a live sound engineer cannot balance a vocal against a drum kit. Without a mixer, a recording studio cannot route multiple instruments to different processing chains or capture them simultaneously to different tracks. The mixer is the central nervous system of any audio application larger than a single source going directly to a single destination.

To understand why mixers matter, start with a concrete scenario. Imagine you are operating sound for a live event with a speaking podium, two lavalier microphones on panelists, a laptop for presentation slides with audio, and a backing track playing from a media player. Each of these sources produces an audio signalβ€”a varying electrical voltage that represents sound. If you connect all four sources directly to a speaker amplifier, they will all play at once, at whatever level they are set to, and you have no way to adjust one without disconnecting it physically.
