Chapter 1: Understanding Audio Amplifiers

An audio amplifier is a device that takes an electrical signal of low power and increases it to higher power while preserving the shape and content of that signal. That single sentence is technically correct, but it tells you almost nothing about why amplifiers matter, how they actually work, or why the design choices engineers make inside them shape what you hear and how long the equipment lasts.

Start with a concrete example. You're running sound for a live band in a 300-seat venue. The lead guitarist plugs his guitar into a mixing console at the front of house. The signal from that guitar is tiny—on the order of 0.1 watts or less. By the time that signal needs to move air in front of 300 people, it needs to be roughly 50 to 100 watts of electrical power. The path from guitar to speakers is the signal chain, and an audio amplifier is the device that bridges the gap between the mixing console's output (typically a few watts) and the power required by the speakers (tens or hundreds of watts). Without that amplification, the sound would be inaudible.

But amplification isn't just about volume. An amplifier has to do three things simultaneously: multiply the power, preserve the accuracy of the signal, and do so reliably in the conditions where it's being used.
