Art charcoal is a porous, finely divided carbon material made by burning wood or bone in a low-oxygen environment and grinding the result into usable form. It marks paper not through ink or wax, but through direct particle adhesion—grains of carbon physically stick to the tooth of the paper surface and build up in layers as you apply pressure. This distinction matters immediately: understanding charcoal as a mechanical, material-based system, not as a fluid or pigment, changes how you select it, use it, store it, and predict its behavior.
When you pick up a charcoal stick or pencil, you're holding a composite: carbon particles suspended in a binder—usually gum arabic, clay, or synthetic resin. The proportions of carbon to binder, the particle size, and the type of binder all determine how the charcoal feels, marks, and behaves on paper. A stick of vine charcoal is mostly carbon with minimal binder; it's fragile, light in tone, and crumbles easily. A stick of compressed charcoal is tightly bound carbon particles; it's denser, darker, and more durable. The marking process itself is straightforward but worth examining. When you apply charcoal to paper, the particles lodge in the microscopic surface irregularities—the "tooth"—of the paper.
