What Arcade Equipment Actually Is
Arcade equipment exists to do one of three things: accept payment (cash, card, or token), deliver a game or experience that holds a player's attention for a defined period, and either award cash payouts, tickets that redeem for prizes, or simply count plays and revenue. The machines are purpose-built for high-frequency use in environments—bars, pizza shops, family entertainment centers, laundromats, casinos—where they compete for a player's dollar among many other attractions.
The core categories are straightforward. Cabinet games (also called arcade cabinets or uprights) contain a monitor or LCD screen, a game board (CPU and memory), input controls like joysticks and buttons, and coin/card payment mechanisms. Pinball machines combine mechanical play fields with electronic scoring and payout logic. Ticket redemption systems include ticket printers, counters, and back-office software that track earned tickets across multiple machines and venues. Prize dispensers automatically vend small goods (plush toys, candy, merchandise) in exchange for earned credits or tickets. Ancillary equipment—cabinets, power distribution, network routers, card readers, change machines—enables the primary machines to function in a networked venue.
