Chapter 1: Understanding Aquatic Plants
Aquatic plants are the most underestimated component of any water feature. A pond, water garden, or planted aquarium can function without them, but it will not be stable. Without plants, you are managing an artificial system that requires mechanical filtration, chemical intervention, and constant vigilance against algae. With plants, you are working with a biological system that does much of the work for you. This chapter explains what aquatic plants actually do, the mechanisms behind their effects, and why understanding those mechanisms matters for anyone who installs or maintains water features for a living or as a serious pursuit.
The Biological Role of Aquatic Plants
An aquatic plant is any plant that has adapted to complete its life cycle with its root system, stem, or leaves submerged in water for at least part of the year. This is a broad category, and it includes plants that look very different from one another: a cattail standing two meters tall at the pond edge, a floating rosette of water lettuce drifting in open water, and a carpet of dwarf hairgrass growing across an aquarium substrate all belong to the same functional group. What unites them is that they perform the same basic biological functions in the water column, and those functions are what you are actually buying when you purchase a plant.
