Aquatic plant fertilizers are simply a means to an end: to supply dissolved elements in a form and at a rate that plants can absorb through their leaves or roots. Unlike terrestrial gardening, where the soil acts as a buffered reservoir and nutrient bank, water is the only medium in an aquarium. This creates a radically different environment. A nutrient that is added to a terrestrial garden can sit in the soil for months, slowly made available by microbes. In water, a nutrient is either dissolved into the water column immediately where it can be absorbed, or it can chemically bind with other substances and become unavailable. This insoluble particulate then either settles into the substrate, where plant roots may access it, or it is captured by the filter and becomes inert waste. The water column is a dynamic, open system, and this is why fertilization is not a simple "add and forget" process, but a constant negotiation with water chemistry, plant uptake, and biological activity.

A planted tank is a closed loop. Light drives photosynthesis, plants consume carbon dioxide and nutrients, and they produce oxygen and biomass.
