What an Aquarium Stand Actually Is
An aquarium stand is a piece of furniture with a structural job. A 75-gallon tank filled with water, gravel, and rock weighs somewhere in the vicinity of 850 to 900 pounds. The stand under it is not just a table — it is a load-bearing structure that must transfer that weight to the floor over a period of years, through daily temperature swings, occasional spills, and the slow, creeping forces of wood movement and fastener fatigue. If you have ever seen a 40-gallon tank sitting on a cheap particleboard TV console, you have seen the core problem: the furniture was never designed to carry a point load of 450 pounds concentrated on four small corners. The particleboard deflects, the joints loosen, and after a year or two the tank is no longer level. A tank that is not level can develop pressure points on the glass, which is exactly how the bottom seams fail.
It is useful to think of an aquarium stand as a system with three sub-systems: the frame, the deck, and the perimeter trim.
