Chapter 1: Understanding Anchors

An anchor is a device designed to hold a vessel in place against wind, tide, and current by creating resistance at the seabed. Unlike a mooring buoy, which is permanently fixed to the bottom, an anchor is deployed when needed and can be recovered and moved. It does its work through a combination of weight, flukes (the arms or blades that dig into the seabed), and the angle and length of the rode — the rope or chain connecting the anchor to the vessel.

The fundamental purpose of an anchor is straightforward: prevent a vessel from drifting. In practice, however, whether an anchor actually holds depends on a constellation of factors that interact in ways most casual boat owners don't fully grasp. A 45-pound anchor will hold a small sailboat in soft mud but may fail catastrophically on hard sand with the same vessel. A 100-pound anchor correctly set in clay will hold far better than a 200-pound anchor dragging across rock. Understanding why requires examining how anchors actually work and what conditions determine success or failure.

How an Anchor Holds

An anchor's holding power comes from two mechanical sources: weight and penetration. Weight alone — the simple downward force of the anchor on the seabed — accounts for only a fraction of an anchor's holding capacity. A 50-pound anchor sitting on bare rock will not hold a vessel in a moderate wind, no matter how heavy it is, because weight alone cannot overcome the horizontal
