Chapter 1: Understanding Anchor Chains
An anchor chain seems straightforward: a length of steel links connecting your vessel to the seabed, holding you in place. In reality, an anchor chain operates within a system of interconnected demands and constraints that determine whether it works reliably or fails when you need it most. Understanding what an anchor chain is requires understanding what it must do, how different forces act on it, and how those forces change based on where you're anchored, what conditions develop, and how the rest of your anchoring system is configured.
What an Anchor Chain Does
An anchor chain transmits the holding force from the anchor on the seabed to the vessel above. That sounds simple, but the load traveling through the chain is not static. As wind speed increases, as current strengthens, as your vessel swings or is struck by waves, the tension in the chain fluctuates. The chain must absorb those dynamic loads without breaking. It must do so in an environment—salt water, submerged mud, sand—that actively degrades steel. And it must remain flexible enough to allow your vessel to swing to changing wind and current without becoming rigid or prone to sudden failure.
A practical example: a 45-foot sailboat weighing 40,000 pounds anchors in 15 feet of water off a lee shore with 15-knot winds.
