It is a system of materials, geometry, and fastening designed to handle forces that would otherwise cause fractures, concussions, lacerations, and soft-tissue damage. What Protective Gear Does
The fundamental job of football protective gear is to extend the time over which an impact force is applied to the body and to spread that force across a larger area. This is not metaphorical. When a player at linebacker depth collides with a running back at full speed, the forces involved are substantial — impact velocities can exceed 20 miles per hour, and the deceleration on unprotected bone and tissue happens over milliseconds.
