American football helmet padding serves a single, concrete purpose: it reduces the force that reaches a player's head during impact. Understanding how it does this—and why the specific material, thickness, and installation method matter—is the foundation for choosing, installing, and maintaining padding correctly.
This is not the same as "cushioning." A pillow cushions you when you rest your head on it. Helmet padding works differently. During a collision, padding compresses rapidly, and as it compresses, it absorbs kinetic energy that would otherwise transfer directly to bone and brain tissue. The better the padding absorbs that energy, the less force travels through the helmet shell to the player's head. The slower the force is transmitted, the lower the peak acceleration experienced by the brain. This matters because concussions and traumatic brain injuries result from rapid acceleration of the brain inside the skull—measured in tens or hundreds of gravities over tens of milliseconds. Padding that slows that acceleration, even by a small margin, reduces injury risk.
Consider a concrete example. A linebacker running at 12 miles per hour collides with another player, and his head decelerates from 12 mph to zero in roughly 20 milliseconds. The padding in his helmet compresses during those 20 milliseconds. If the padding is thin or stiff, it compresses completely in 5 milliseconds, and the remaining 15 milliseconds the force transfers directly to the helmet shell and the player's skull.
