Airsoft is a recreational sport and training tool that simulates shooting scenarios using replica firearms that fire small plastic pellets. The term "airsoft" refers both to the activity itself and the equipment—the replicas, the projectiles, the protective gear, and the fields or facilities where play occurs. To understand airsoft's role in the broader landscape of shooting sports and simulation training, you need to start with how the equipment actually works, what contexts it serves, and why it has grown into a legitimate business and professional category.
What Airsoft Equipment Actually Is
An airsoft replica is a mechanical or electrical device engineered to resemble a real firearm while firing 6mm or 8mm plastic pellets (called "BBs" or "rounds") using compressed air. The replica itself contains no ammunition, no real projectile, and no combustion—it does not fire bullets. Instead, it uses one of three mechanisms to propel a plastic pellet at speeds typically between 200 and 500 feet per second (fps), depending on the rifle type, the internal spring strength, and the power source.
The three core mechanisms are spring-powered, gas-powered, and electric. A spring-powered airsoft rifle (also called a "bolt-action" or "sniper rifle" in airsoft terminology) requires manual cocking before each shot—the operator pulls back a bolt or pump handle, which compresses an internal spring, and releases it to fire one round. Gas-powered replicas use compressed gas (typically propane or CO2) stored in a magazine or internal reservoir; the operator pulls the trigger, which opens a valve
