Chapter 1: Understanding Air Hockey

Air hockey is a mechanical and pneumatic game. Understanding what that means—and why it matters—is the foundation for buying, installing, maintaining, or profiting from air hockey tables.

At its core, an air hockey table is a large, flat playing surface with thousands of tiny holes drilled through it. Underneath that surface sits a centrifugal blower or electric pump that pulls air through a manifold system and pushes it back up through those holes. The escaping air creates a thin, continuous cushion—typically around 0.01 to 0.05 inches thick—that allows the puck to glide across the surface with almost no friction. This is not magic. It is physics and engineering working in concert, and understanding how it works will help you choose the right table, diagnose problems when they occur, and avoid expensive mistakes.

How the Air System Works

The air generation system is the heart of every air hockey table. Most tables use one of two approaches: a direct-drive centrifugal blower mounted beneath the playing surface, or a remote air compressor connected to the table via ducting. Entry-level tables often use smaller, noisier blowers built directly into the cabinet. Commercial and tournament-grade tables typically rely on more powerful remote compressors that run quieter and produce more consistent air pressure.
