Air hockey is a simple game in concept: two players use hand-held strikers to hit a puck across a smooth table toward an opponent's goal. But the game's apparent simplicity masks a carefully engineered system where dozens of components must work together precisely for the table to function as intended. Understanding what those parts are, how they interact, and why they matter is the foundation for making sound decisions about selecting, installing, maintaining, and repairing air hockey tables.

An air hockey table is fundamentally a machine designed to minimize friction between the puck and the playing surface. This is the core principle on which everything else depends. In ordinary games like billiards or shuffleboard, gravity and table tilt control ball movement. In air hockey, the table is completely level, and the puck's motion is governed by the air layer beneath it—a layer created and sustained by a constantly running air compressor and distribution system. Without that air column, the puck would slide slowly and unpredictably, and the game would not work.
