At its core, an air conditioner cover is a protective shell designed to shield an idle HVAC component from the external environment during its off-season. This seems obvious, but the practical reality is far more complex. The job of an air conditioner cover is not merely to be a blanket; it is to manage a delicate balance between keeping things out and letting things out. A cover that fails to manage this balance can cause more damage than it prevents.
The primary battle is against moisture. An unused air conditioner—whether a small window unit or a massive commercial condenser—is a shell of metal and electronics. When the ambient temperature drops at night, the metal components cool faster than the surrounding air. This creates a condition where moisture in the air condenses on these cold surfaces, much like a glass of iced tea on a summer day. If you throw an impermeable layer of plastic over this unit, you are not protecting it from moisture; you are creating a sealed microclimate where that condensation is trapped.
