What Advertising and Marketing Actually Are

Advertising and marketing are often treated as synonyms, but they are distinct functions that work together. Marketing is the broader system: it is the set of activities you use to understand your market, position your offer, set pricing, choose distribution channels, and communicate your value. Advertising is a subset of marketing. It is the paid, non-personal communication that you push out through a medium to reach a defined audience. A useful way to think about it: marketing is the strategy and the full customer journey; advertising is a specific tool within that strategy, used to attract attention and generate demand.

Consider a small manufacturer of commercial espresso machines. The marketing function includes deciding to target specialty coffee shops rather than big-box retailers, pricing the machine at a premium to match its build quality, and selecting a sales channel that includes direct sales and a network of equipment distributors. The advertising function is the paid campaign: Google search ads targeting buyers searching for "commercial espresso machine," a trade publication placement, and a sponsored demo at a coffee industry show.
