Chapter 1: What Is Robotics and Why People Love It
The first thing you should know about robotics is that it is not one hobby. It's three hobbies duct-taped together, and that's the best way to understand what you're walking into. Every robotics project, from a tiny line-following bot to something with a camera and a claw, is a mixture of mechanical work, electrical wiring, and computer code. Each of those three pieces requires a different skill, a different tool, and a different kind of patience. If you only enjoy one of the three, or even two, you will need to find a way to push through the third.
But here's the flip side of that coin: because it's three hobbies in one, you can't get bored. Let's say you've spent two hours carefully assembling a frame out of an aluminum channel kit. You've tightened a dozen tiny screws, wrestled with a stubborn motor mount that was bent out of shape, and your fingers are getting sore from the precision work. Just as your patience starts to wear thin, you're done with the mechanical part. Now you're moving inside — stripping insulation off two short wires so you can attach a motor controller, checking to make sure the correct pin on a microcontroller is about to get its signal. It's a quick manual task, but it's your first foray into the electrical side. A few minutes later, you're on the keyboard, opening up the coding environment on your laptop.
