Chapter 1: What Is Belly Dancing and Why People Love It

Let's start by clearing up a popular myth: belly dancing is not about being thin, flexible, or already knowing how to dance. It is about learning to move a specific part of your body in isolation while the rest of your body stays more or less still, and then doing that to music that makes your hips want to move. That's it. The fancy sequined costumes you see online are the finished product, the stage outfit. They are not training gear.
