Chapter 1: What Does a Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technologist and Technician Actually Do?

Let's clear something up right away: an Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technologist and Technician (EET for short) is not an electrical engineer, and you should know that distinction before you go any further. An engineer designs the system on paper — they calculate the load, specify the components, draw the schematic. The technologist and the technician are the people who take that design, turn it into something physical, test it to make sure it won't catch fire or fail in a year, and then keep it running when it inevitably breaks down. You are the bridge between the theory and the machine. If you like seeing results you can touch, this is why you're here.

There are actually two overlapping roles here, and the lines blur in many companies. A technician typically has an associate degree or certificate and focuses on building, installing, troubleshooting, and repairing equipment. A technologist usually has a bachelor's degree in engineering technology and does more of the testing, calibration, and diagnostic work, often working closely with the engineers to refine a design based on what the technician found on the floor. In practice, a small company might hire one "tech" to do all of it. A large factory might have a team of ten, with clear levels of seniority. The job title on your door matters less than the skills you bring.
