When someone says they are an automotive engineer, most people picture the same thing: a glossy studio, a sleek concept car, and someone in a crisp shirt waving a stylus over a digital model. That image is not exactly wrong, but it is wildly incomplete. It omits the 3 a.m. emails about a failed durability test, the smell of overheated brake pads, the arguments about a tolerance that adds fifteen cents to a part, and the spreadsheet that tells you your vehicle launch is slipping by exactly eleven days. This chapter is about what an automotive engineer actually does from Monday to Friday, not what the brochures show.
First, let's define the occupation properly. An automotive engineer designs, develops, tests, and improves the vehicles you see on the road — and the hundreds of millions of components inside them. But the title is a broad umbrella. Underneath it sit several major specialties: powertrain engineers work on engines, transmissions, and electric drive units; chassis engineers handle suspension, steering, and brakes; body engineers design the structure, doors, and closures; electrical engineers manage the wiring harnesses, infotainment, and driver-assist features; and vehicle integration engineers are the people who make sure all those subsystems work together without fighting each other. If you join a company like Ford, Toyota, or Bosch, you will be hired into one of these disciplines, not into "general automotive engineering" — the job is much too large for any single person
