Let's start by clearing away the image you probably have in your head.
You're picturing a person in a clean white room, surrounded by glowing screens, watching a rocket launch on a giant monitor, maybe pressing a single dramatic button. That happens, but it's maybe one hour out of a hundred. The other ninety-nine hours are the real job.
An aerospace engineering technologist or technician - and for the rest of this chapter, I'll use "tech" to cover both, since the daily work overlaps heavily - is the person who makes sure the hardware actually works. The engineer designs the part; you build it, test it, install it, troubleshoot it, and fix it when it breaks. You are the bridge between the math on a screen and the physical reality of a machine that has to survive extreme heat, cold, vibration, and pressure without failing.
If you work on commercial aircraft, that means you're the one who ensures a flap actuator moves 4.2 inches per second, every single time, for 20,000 cycles. If you work on military jets, you might be calibrating the radar system or swapping out an avionics box that's throwing a fault code. If you work in space, you could be running vibration tests on a satellite panel, torquing bolts to a very specific spec, or checking that the thermal blankets are sealed correctly so no heat leaks out.
