Chapter 1: What Does a Solar Thermal Installer and Technician Actually Do?
Let's strip away the brochure language and talk about what you would actually be doing on a Tuesday morning. A solar thermal installer and technician is, at the core, a specialized plumber and pipefitter who works on systems that use the sun's heat to warm water, not to make electricity. Photovoltaic panels generate electrons. Thermal panels generate heat. Your job is to install, connect, and maintain the equipment that captures that heat and moves it into a building's hot water supply or radiators. That distinction matters because it changes everything about your day.
Your primary work site will be a roof, a mechanical room, or both. Most residential jobs involve installing flat-plate or evacuated-tube collectors on a south-facing roof. A flat-plate collector looks like a large, rectangular glass-covered box, usually four feet by eight feet, weighing anywhere from 60 to 90 pounds. Evacuated tubes are rows of glass tubes—each about the size of a broom handle—mounted in a frame. Both do the same job: they absorb sunlight and convert it to heat, which is then transferred to a liquid flowing through the panels. That liquid is usually a mixture of water and propylene glycol, which is essentially food-grade antifreeze. You will hear this called the "solar loop."
