Chapter 1: What Does a Solar Energy Systems Engineer Actually Do?

Let's start by clearing up a very common misconception. When most people hear "solar energy systems engineer," they picture someone in a hard hat on a rooftop, tilting photovoltaic panels toward the sun. That person is real, but they're typically called a solar installer, not an engineer. The engineer is the one who made a computer model of that rooftop months before anyone got near it, calculated exactly how many panels fit without violating fire codes, and decided what thickness of wire connects them to the inverter. The engineer is probably sitting in an office right now, watching a three-dimensional model rotate on a screen, checking that the tilt angle doesn't hurt annual production by more than 2.3 percent.

Your core responsibility as a Solar Energy Systems Engineer is to design photovoltaic (PV) systems that are safe, legal, and financially worthwhile. "Photovoltaic" just means the panels convert sunlight directly into electricity. Your job is to take a client's goal — lower their electric bill, earn a tax credit, or provide power to a remote facility — and translate that goal into a detailed set of drawings and calculations that a construction crew can build. That translation is the heart of the profession.
