Chapter 1: What Does a Reinforcing Iron and Rebar Worker Actually Do?

You are standing on a bare dirt lot in late March. The ground is still soft from the frost coming out of it, and the air smells like wet clay and diesel exhaust. In six months, this lot will be a four-story apartment building, but right now it is just a muddy hole with a few concrete footings poured at the bottom. And if you are a reinforcing iron and rebar worker, your job is to build the skeleton that will hold that building's weight before anyone ever pours the concrete that hides it.

Every concrete structure you have ever walked through, driven over, or slept inside—from the parking garage under your office to the bridge deck on the interstate to the foundation of the hospital where you were born—has steel inside it. That steel is reinforcing bar, which everyone in the trade just calls rebar. It is what gives concrete its strength. Concrete alone can handle being squeezed by enormous weight from above, but it will crack and fall apart if you try to stretch or bend it. Steel is the opposite: it can handle bending and pulling, but it is too expensive to build solid. So engineers put the two together.
