So let's start with the physical reality: this is a trade where you spend your working hours inside, around, and sometimes literally inside industrial machines that generate enough heat to melt steel. You are the person who makes sure those machines don't fall apart.
The "refractory" in the title refers to refractory materials - specialized bricks, castables, and ceramic fiber blankets that are designed to line the inside of high-temperature equipment. These materials can withstand heat that would melt regular steel. A typical furnace lining might need to hold up at 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit or more. Over time, that lining gets beaten up. It cracks from thermal shock when a furnace is heated up and cooled down. It erodes from molten metal splashing against it. It gets corroded by chemical reactions from slag and fluxes.
