You're probably here because the job title "radiation therapist" sounds meaningful - maybe even a little intimidating - but you don't actually know what one does. Let's fix that right now. A radiation therapist is the healthcare professional who operates the machines that deliver radiation therapy to cancer patients. That's the one-sentence answer. The real answer is a lot richer, and it's important you understand it, because the day-to-day work is probably not what you're picturing.

Imagine walking into a hospital or a cancer center on a typical morning. You clock in and head to the radiation oncology department, which is usually in the basement or on a lower floor, because the walls are several feet of concrete to contain the radiation. You've got your scrubs on, and you're looking at the schedule board for the day. It's stacked. You'll see roughly 30 to 45 patients on a typical full caseload for a single therapist, depending on the center. Each patient is a "fraction" - that's the medical term for a single dose of radiation - and most patients need to come in daily, Monday through Friday, for three to six weeks straight. So you're not doing a one-off treatment; you're building a routine with the same patients over a month or more.
