At its heart, photonics engineering is about controlling light to do a practical job. That means designing the optical paths that light travels along, choosing the right components to shape or detect that light, and then testing the whole system to make sure it works reliably - not just once in a perfect lab, but every time, in heat and cold and vibration. A typical project might be designing a laser sensor that measures distance with millimeter precision, or developing a fiber-optic component that splits one beam of light into 32 separate channels, each carrying different data.
