Chapter 1: What Does a Market Research Analyst and Marketing Specialist Actually Do?

Let's strip away the job title and look at what the work actually is. A market research analyst and marketing specialist does two connected things: they find out what customers want, need, think, and do, and then they turn that information into decisions that help their company sell more effectively. On any given day, you might be designing a survey, cleaning a pile of raw data, building a chart that explains a trend, or sitting in a meeting where you tell the head of marketing that their new campaign idea is based on a faulty assumption. It is a job that lives between the messy world of human behavior and the exacting world of spreadsheets.

The research side of the role is all about gathering data. You'll decide what questions need answers. A product manager might ask, "Why are people abandoning our app before they complete a purchase?" A brand manager might ask, "How do people our age perceive our brand compared to our biggest competitor?" Your job is to figure out how to get reliable answers to those questions. Sometimes that means designing an online survey and working with a panel provider to send it to a specific demographic sample.
