Chapter 1: What Does a Machinist Actually Do?

A machinist is someone who makes metal parts — precise, interchangeable, often complex parts — using machine tools that cut, grind, drill, or shape raw material like steel, aluminum, titanium, or plastic. If you've ever held a wrench, looked at a car engine, or used a laptop, you've touched something a machinist made. The guy who builds the mold for your plastic water bottle? Machinist. The person who programs and runs the machine that turns a hunk of aluminum into a surgical instrument? Machinist. The woman who sets up a lathe to produce 500 custom brass fittings for a naval ship? Also a machinist.
The job is not one thing. It's a spectrum that ranges from running a fully automated CNC (computer numerical control) machine that you simply load and monitor, to manually operating a lathe or mill where every movement of the cutting tool is controlled by your hands and eyes. Most machinists do a mix of both, but it's important to understand the distinction because it shapes what your day actually looks like.

The Machines: Your New Workbench
There are three big categories of machine tools you'll encounter: the lathe, the mill, and the grinder. There are also EDM (electrical discharge machining) machines and waterjets, but you'll cut your teeth on the first three.
The lathe spins the workpiece
