Chapter 1: What Does a Heat Treating Equipment Setter, Operator, and Tender, Metal and Plastic Actually Do?
Imagine a part that keeps an airplane's landing gear from collapsing, a gear that transfers power in a wind turbine, or the blade of a bulldozer that has to scrape against rock all day. None of those parts work unless they've been through a furnace at a carefully controlled temperature, for a carefully controlled length of time, and then cooled in a carefully controlled way. That process is called heat treating, and the person who makes sure it happens correctly is the equipment setter, operator, and tender.
If you take this job, you are not a designer and you are not a machinist. You are the person in charge of the metallurgical transformation. You take metal parts that other people have shaped, or raw stock that needs to be prepared, and you run them through a series of heating and cooling cycles to change their internal structure. That structure change is what makes steel hard enough to cut other steel, or tough enough to take a hit without shattering, or flexible enough to spring back into shape. You don't see the change happen, but you are responsible for it. When a part fails in the field, and it was heat treated wrong, it's your logbook they pull out first to figure out what went wrong.
