Let's strip away the job title and talk about what this work actually is. A Furnace, Kiln, Oven, Drier, and Kettle Operator and Tender is the person who runs the huge, extremely hot pieces of equipment that transform raw materials into usable products. Think about the glass in your car windows, the ceramic tiles in your kitchen, the bread in your toaster, the steel beams in office buildings, the asphalt on your street, or the chemicals in industrial processes. Somewhere before those products reached you, someone operated a machine that cooked, baked, dried, or melted something at high temperatures. That someone is this occupation.
The job title covers a lot of territory. One day you might be monitoring a rotary kiln at a cement plant that's rotating 300 tons of limestone at 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit. Another operator might be running a drying oven at a lumber mill, pulling moisture out of freshly cut planks so they don't warp. Another might tend a kettle of asphalt at a paving company, keeping it hot enough to stay liquid but not so hot it becomes a fire hazard. The common thread is that you are responsible for a contained fire or a controlled heating process, and you're making sure it goes exactly right, for as long as your shift runs.
The core of the job is monitoring. You are not a firefighter; you are not a chef.
